The Story

We're off to see the wizard! This beloved tale, in which a Kansas farm girl travels over the rainbow to discover the magical power of home, has entertained audiences for generations. Join Dorothy, Toto, Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion as they journey down the yellow brick road, singing some of the most recognizable songs in musical theater history.

Based upon the Classic Motion Picture owned by Turner Entertainment Co. and distributed in all media by Warner Bros.

AUDITION INFORMATION 

Please come any time during the audition dates and times. Auditions will last about 30-45 minutes.  

- Prepare about 1 minute of a song to sing that exemplifies your talent. You may sing with a track or acapella.  

- A dance audition will be taught.  (Be sure to come in clothes and shoes that enable movement.)

- There will be cold readings from the script.

REHEARSALS

Rehearsals will generally be Tuesday and Thursday (with some rehearsals on Wednesday) evenings from 7-9pm, and Saturdays from 2-5pm. No absences allowed during tech weeks (June 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 30, July 1, 6, 7, 8, 9) and during performances. NO rehearsal July 2-5. A more specific rehearsal schedule will be available at auditions.  Our first meeting will be on Wednesday, May 13 and rehearsals begin on Thursday, May 14.

CASTING INFORMATION

Age 13 & Up. Actors of ALL ethnicities are encouraged to audition.  A total cast of up to 20 actors is needed. 

DOROTHY GALE: female, (Mezzo/Mix) Young Kansas girl, earnest, expressive, and
strong-willed, in search of something more. Very strong singer who moves well.

HUNK / SCARECROW: male, (Baritone) Plucky and clever in a pinch, even while lacking a
brain. Strong actor with an honest quality. Excellent dancer – acrobatic skills a bonus. Strong
baritone to F.

HICKORY / TIN MAN: male, (Baritone/Tenor) Desperate for a heart. A kind-hearted romantic.
Singing and dance required. Strong baritone / tenor to G.

ZEKE / COWARDLY LION: male, (Baritone) A mix of bravado and cowardice. Should move
well. Cuddly actor with excellent comic timing. Vocal range: Strong baritone to F.

ALMIRA GULTCH / WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST: female. Character villain with an
over-the-top stage presence. Excellent comic actress, has a killer cackle. Sings comically, but
doesn’t have to sound good.

PROFESSOR MARVEL / THE WIZARD: male. Older father figure with an eccentric flair.
Basic conjuring or sleight of hand a bonus.  Can be non-singing.

GLINDA: female, (Soprano) Glinda is the Good Witch of the North. Benevolent and beloved.
Strong singer.

AUNT EM: female. Aunt Em is demanding, but loves her niece. Can be non-singing.

UNCLE HENRY: male. Dorothy’s pleasant uncle.  Can be non-singing.

EMERALD CITY GUARD: male, (Baritone) Strong comic actor, big presence.

TOTO: male/female, Dorothy’s dog, Toto will be a puppet much like a Lion King puppet. Puppet Operator/Master will be needed.  Actor must comfortable getting up and off the ground quickly and mobile.  Can be non-singing.

MUNCHKINS: boys and girls. The little people of Munchkinland. Long oppressed, and happy to
be freed, the Munchkins will (mostly) be played by children. Group singing and coordinated
movement required. Dance experience is a plus. There are some featured roles among the
munchkins, such as The Coroner, The Lollipop Guild, and The Lullaby League.

WINKIES: Teens and Adults. The chorus of the show, with featured speaking/vocal/dancing
roles available. Singing and movement required.

FLYING MONKEYS: Boys and girls. The chorus of the show, with featured speaking/vocal/dancing roles available. Singing and movement required.

OZIANS / EMERALD CITY ENSEMBLE: All ages. The chorus of the show, with featured
speaking/vocal/dancing roles available.

NOTE: Roles that call for a specific ethnicity or type will be open for consideration of actors of other ethnicities. The characters in this show are on the binary and written with he/him or she/her pronouns as you see in the descriptions. However, we seek to be as inclusive as possible and ask gender non-conforming, gender queer, transgender and non-binary actors to list on the audition form the roles they most identify with. We also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character, but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities.
